After skiing Mount Thielsen the previous day (our 5th straight day of ski mountaineering), we needed a break and so headed to Bend to stay in a motel, unsure if we'd have the energy to do another big trip. The next morning arose brilliantly clear and sunny, and we were inspired to go on to our next objective, South Sister. Driving towards the Sisters from Bend, the first major volcano one sees is the near-perfect cone of Mount Bachelor, home of Oregon's largest ski area.
