The night was crisp and cold, with temps below freezing as we departed for the summit at 4:30 am on Sunday morning. We put our skis on our packs and climbed on foot with crampons up the firm, steepening snow of the upper Avalanche Gulch. Headlamps were barely needed, since the dawn was soon greeting us.
