This trip was my long-time friend Bill Bazley's first time snowboarding outside a ski area. Also with us was Dave Harber, another grad student from my lab who is from Colorado and is quite a fine snowboarder. That's the two of them hidden in the shadows just ahead, on the trail above the parking lot at Paradise. Even in late July, the astounding snowfall of the previous winter (1033 inches at Paradise) ensured continuous snow right from the trailhead. However, farther ahead near Panorama Point, the steep south facing pitch was melted snow-free as usual.
