Suphan Dagi is the second highest volcano in Turkey, a broad cone which rises over 7900 ft (2400 m) directly above the north shore of Lake Van. This is a very large and deep alkaline-saline lake, about 75 miles (120 km) long and 55 miles (90 km) wide with a maximum depth of 1480 ft (451 m), formed when a lava flow from Nemrut Dagi blocked its river outlet. The substantial winter snowpack on Suphan Dagi (reputed to reach over 10 ft / 3 m in depth) combines with the high elevation to maintain several small glaciers in the summit crater and on the surrounding upper slopes. Suphan has become increasingly popular with skiers in recent years, including commercially guided heli-skiers. Even for those on foot or skis, access is very direct from the main highway along the north coast of the lake.
