Snaefellsjokull is one of the more popular and accessible volcanoes in Iceland, located beside the Atlantic at the western tip of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula northwest of the capital of Reykjavik. With a history of climbing dating back over two centuries, Snaefellsjokull makes an easy ascent and descent on skis throughout the winter and spring, although the summit pinnacle apparently requires some moderate ice climbing. However, the weather in this part of Iceland is typically even stormier than in the rest of the country, since it is exposed directly to the prevailing gales from the west and southwest.
